Petanque and Puppets -- Mid Afternoon in July
|
|
|
 |
|
It really was a delightful afternoon -- the
Saturday farmers’ market was in the process of wrapping
up another successful day -- and, then came the next scene --
organized by Susie Vrotsos, a Winchesterite and an active
member of the Winchester Jumelage. The Winchester
Jumelage in collaboration with the French Cultural Center in
Boston unrolled first, a petanque competition and then a
puppet show. Why? Well, why not? It is a summer day --
time for using our own Town Common. And, petanque and puppet
in the park are a worldwide tradition [or at least we
might think so]. |
| |
| Pétanque is a form of
boules where the goal is, while standing inside a starting
circle with both feet on the ground, to throw metal balls as
close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet.
The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can
also be played on grass as it was this day on the
Winchester Common. |

The puppet show was tres
extraordinaire -- puppeteer Charlotte Dore entertained us for
half an hour with her stable of puppets -- a mermaid, a
whale, a pirate, several fish and sea-creatures -- and of
course, her dialogue and song -- and, her prompting of
audience participation |

 |
| Perhaps forty citizens --
adults and children -- passersby and Jumelage aficionados --
or just plaincurious -- assembled to see what was going
on -- and for perhaps one and one-half hours it wasan
event!!! -- some spoke French -- most spoke English -- some
had played petanque before -- forothers it was a first
time experience -- and, few had experienced this puppet
show!!! |
